Planckian is a Pisa-based quantum technology startup that emerged as a joint spinoff from the University of Pisa and Scuola Normale Superiore, working on solid-state energy technology based on quantum mechanics. Its research uses quantum effects to enable qubits to reach collective higher energy states, with potential applications in sustainable energy, including quantum batteries capable of indefinite energy storage. The company also develops superconducting quantum computers with global control schemes, combining its quantum battery research with quantum computing hardware development.

In July 2023, Planckian secured 2.7 million euros in pre-seed funding led by CDP Venture, Exor Ventures, and private investors to move beyond traditional electrochemical approaches in energy technology. Founded by quantum researchers including Marco Polini, Chief Scientific Officer, and Vittorio Giovannetti, Executive Scientific Advisor, Planckian reflects Italy's push into quantum energy applications and next-generation quantum processor architectures. In June 2025, the company signed partnerships with the University of Naples Federico II and its QTLab quantum computing center to test and validate its scalable superconducting processor designs, which cut control wiring by letting multiple qubits share a single control line. This processor work has become the company's primary focus. Update 2026-05-14: Seth Lloyd has joined Planckian. Source: https://quantumzeitgeist.com/seth-lloyd-joins-planckian-landmark/

Rotonium is an Italian deep-tech startup founded in 2022 that develops single-photon qudit technology for room-temperature quantum computing. It secured EUR 1 million in seed funding led by Galaxia and CDP Venture Capital to advance the technology.

The company builds photonic quantum accelerators that let quantum computers run at room temperature, which allows for compact systems usable on Earth, in the air, and in space. Its technology is designed to operate in energy-constrained environments such as space, and Rotonium focuses on quantum computing for space and edge applications where cryogenic quantum computers are impractical. The company plans to work with universities and research centers on next-generation quantum processing, and its room-temperature single-photon qudit approach is a distinct architectural path from superconducting and trapped-ion designs, aimed at specialized aerospace and edge computing markets.

In March 2026, the company announced that CEO Roberto Siagri would present at the Quantum Computing in Life Sciences conference in Milan on April 16, 2026, covering photonic quantum accelerators for pharmaceutical molecule development and genome analysis. Update 2026-03-17: Rotonium demonstrated how its photonic quantum accelerators can integrate into life science workflows for complex molecule development and genome analysis.
