About
Ephos is a producer of glass-based photonic chips. In September 2024 it raised $8.5 million in seed funding and opened the world's first facility dedicated to designing and producing glass-based photonic chips, located in Milan. The company's proprietary technology builds glass-based photonic chips with best-in-class performance for signal loss, a critical advantage in constructing quantum computers. Its 3D design and manufacturing capabilities open up new scaling opportunities and computational modes that improve system performance. The funding round was led by Starlight Ventures, with participation from Joe Zadeh, former Vice President at Airbnb, Diego Piacentini, former Senior Vice President at Amazon, and Simone Severini, General Manager of Quantum Technologies at Amazon Web Services. Glass-based photonic chips also have applications beyond quantum computing, including data centers, where they can reduce energy footprints. In 2025, Ephos secured a EUR 41.5M grant under the EU Chips Act, the first awarded to a startup, to build Fab-2, a glass-based photonic chip manufacturing facility in Italy.
