About
Planckian is a Pisa-based quantum technology startup that emerged as a joint spinoff from the University of Pisa and Scuola Normale Superiore, working on solid-state energy technology based on quantum mechanics. Its research uses quantum effects to enable qubits to reach collective higher energy states, with potential applications in sustainable energy, including quantum batteries capable of indefinite energy storage. The company also develops superconducting quantum computers with global control schemes, combining its quantum battery research with quantum computing hardware development. In July 2023, Planckian secured 2.7 million euros in pre-seed funding led by CDP Venture, Exor Ventures, and private investors to move beyond traditional electrochemical approaches in energy technology. Founded by quantum researchers including Marco Polini, Chief Scientific Officer, and Vittorio Giovannetti, Executive Scientific Advisor, Planckian reflects Italy's push into quantum energy applications and next-generation quantum processor architectures. In June 2025, the company signed partnerships with the University of Naples Federico II and its QTLab quantum computing center to test and validate its scalable superconducting processor designs, which cut control wiring by letting multiple qubits share a single control line. This processor work has become the company's primary focus. Update 2026-05-14: Seth Lloyd has joined Planckian. Source: https://quantumzeitgeist.com/seth-lloyd-joins-planckian-landmark/
