Blackhills Quantum is a Belgian cybersecurity company that provides quantum-secure cloud solutions and consulting services for quantum-enabled data security. Founded in Hasselt, Belgium, it specializes in implementations of QKD (Quantum Key Distribution), PQC (Post-Quantum Cryptography), and QRNG (Quantum Random Number Generation). Its offerings are vendor-neutral and crypto-agile, following a hybrid approach, and its flagship QS DOME product delivers quantum security for public and private cloud environments.

The company has formed partnerships with defense contractors and cybersecurity firms to strengthen its quantum security solutions. The European Innovation Council (EIC) Accelerator is the European Commission's flagship programme to support high-tech startups and SMEs scaling breakthrough innovations. Since 2024 it has emerged as the world's most active quantum technology investor.

Operating with €10 billion in total resources, the EIC Accelerator provides grants of up to €2.5 million combined with equity investments of up to €15 million. The EIC named quantum technology a key strategic challenge area through its EIC Accelerator Challenges, providing additional targeted funding for quantum semiconductor and quantum technology components. The EIC Accelerator Challenge for 2025 specifically targets emerging semiconductor and quantum technology components.

Recent quantum company awards include €17.5M for SemiQon's cryogenic CMOS chips and €12.5M for eleQtron's on-chip ion traps. In 2024, five quantum technology startups received EIC Transition grants of approximately €2.5 million each. In early 2025, nine European quantum tech start-ups and SMEs were selected for EIC support, and in Q1 2026, 61 start-ups and SMEs secured EIC support in the latest round.

The program is administered from Brussels with a pan-European scope covering all EU member states and associated Horizon Europe countries.

European Innovation Council Accelerator

Imec is a research and innovation hub in nanoelectronics and digital technologies, based in Leuven, Belgium, and founded in 1984. It runs extensive quantum computing semiconductor fabrication programs and provides process development and manufacturing services for quantum processors.

Imec collaborates with quantum hardware companies including Diraq, fabricating silicon spin qubits on 300mm wafers using standard CMOS materials. In June 2024, Diraq announced 99.9% control accuracy for silicon spin qubits fabricated by Imec on 300mm wafers, demonstrating scalable quantum processor manufacturing. By letting quantum computing companies manufacture qubits with existing semiconductor infrastructure, Imec reduces costs and accelerates development. It serves quantum hardware startups working on superconducting qubits, silicon spin qubits, and other quantum computing architectures. In October 2025, a Nature paper with Diraq showed silicon spin qubits exceeding 99% two-qubit gate fidelity on imec's 300mm industrial process. Imec

QustomDot is a Ghent University spinoff, established in January 2020, that develops cadmium-free quantum dot inks and resins for microLED displays, converting blue LED light into red and green. Its technology produces high-quality quantum dots with precise control over optical properties, useful for quantum light sources, single-photon emitters, and next-generation displays.

In November 2024 the company secured a €2.7M financing round from PMV, the Flemish investment body, along with QBIC, Vigo Ventures, Noshaq, and the EIC Fund. In total it has raised $9.2M, made up of €4.8M in venture capital and €5.2M in grants, the latter including a €2.5M EIC Accelerator grant with access to a €3.5M equity facility.

Across 2024 and 2025, QustomDot began product sampling with top microLED manufacturers in Taiwan and established five active industry partnerships, with plans to engage advanced display manufacturers worldwide in 2025. The microLED display market is projected to reach $27B by 2027.

QBee is a Belgian quantum technology startup founded in 2020 by Koen Bertels in Brasschaat, Belgium.
