The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) is China's national academy for natural sciences, founded in 1949 and headquartered in Beijing. It is the institutional umbrella for the country's leading quantum research, including the CAS Center for Excellence in Quantum Information and Quantum Physics (CEQIQ), the Hefei National Laboratory, and quantum programmes at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC). CAS-affiliated teams led by Pan Jianwei delivered the Micius quantum-communications satellite in 2016, the 4,600 km Beijing-Shanghai fibre-plus-satellite quantum-secured backbone, the Jiuzhang photonic quantum-advantage experiments, and the Zuchongzhi superconducting processor series. The CAS quantum portfolio spans QKD network engineering, photonic and superconducting hardware, atomic clocks, and quantum sensing. Recent results have continued to set records. In March 2025, a USTC team led by Pan Jianwei and Zhu Xiaobo unveiled Zuchongzhi 3.0, a 105-qubit superconducting processor, claiming a random circuit sampling speed far beyond any classical supercomputer. In December 2025 the group demonstrated quantum error correction below the fault-tolerance threshold on Zuchongzhi 3.2 using a distance-7 surface code. In May 2026, CAS published Jiuzhang 4.0 in Nature, a photonic Gaussian boson sampling prototype that detected 3,050 photons, though like the earlier Jiuzhang machines it is a sampling device rather than a universal quantum computer. Update 2026-04-06: Researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences designed a quantum bus using engineered virtual photons to connect spin and superconducting modules.
