About
Verizon Communications Inc. is an American multinational telecommunications conglomerate founded in 1983 and headquartered in New York City. It ran one of the first US carrier QKD pilots in 2020, deploying a three-node QKD network in the Washington DC area, and has since expanded its trials to include a Boston-area deployment. In September 2025, engineers at the University of Pennsylvania, working on Verizon's campus network, demonstrated the transmission of quantum data over commercial fibre using standard Internet Protocol, a milestone for IP-routable quantum networking. Verizon offers a quantum-safe VPN service for enterprise customers, contributes the carrier perspective to the DOE-funded Q-NEXT research centre, and is migrating its internal cryptographic stack to NIST PQC standards ahead of the harvest-now-decrypt-later horizon.
