About
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) was founded in 1987 by Morris Chang as the world's first dedicated semiconductor foundry. It is headquartered in the Hsinchu Science Park in Hsinchu, Taiwan, and held 62% of the semiconductor fabrication market in 2024. TSMC has moved into photonic chip manufacturing, assembling a team of about 200 researchers focused on ultra-high-speed silicon photonic chips and collaborating with Broadcom and Nvidia. In April 2024 it announced the start of silicon photonic chip production. The company is also involved in quantum computing research and fabrication: the NTU-TSMC Research Center counts quantum computing with silicon qubits among its main interests, and quantum random number generator (QRNG) chip designs have been submitted to TSMC for fabrication. Research areas range from fundamental qubit devices to the integration of multiple qubits, qubit testing, and noise analysis. TSMC supplies advanced semiconductor fabrication to quantum computing manufacturers, photonic quantum computing companies, and quantum research institutions building quantum processors and photonic quantum chips.
