Toshiba Quantum Technology Division is based in Cambridge, United Kingdom, and operates as part of Toshiba Europe Limited's Cambridge Research Laboratory. It is headed by Andrew Shields. Toshiba began quantum cryptography research in 1999 and manufactures the Multiplexed QKD System at its Cambridge UK base. The division has demonstrated record-breaking QKD transmission distances and has deployed quantum-secured networks across Europe and Asia. It serves telecommunications operators, government agencies, financial institutions, and critical infrastructure sectors that need commercial-grade quantum key distribution systems and quantum-safe networking equipment. In May 2024, Toshiba developed a quantum random number generator fully integrated into semiconductor chips and ready for mass manufacture. In March 2025, Toshiba Europe Limited launched a commercial QKD system that integrates post-quantum cryptography using NIST's ML-KEM standard for added quantum-safe security. In March 2026, Toshiba Europe developed technology to interconnect geographically separated QKD networks globally without additional hardware, using a hybrid QKD plus PQC bridge. Toshiba collaborates with telecommunications operators including BT Group and with global financial institutions to deploy quantum-safe communications infrastructure. In April 2024, Toshiba and Single Quantum B.V. extended QKD range to 300km, double the previous limit, using superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors. In December 2025, Toshiba partnered with Quantum Corridor Inc. to demonstrate QKD over a live 21.8km metro fiber network connecting Illinois and Indiana, achieving FIPS 140-3 Level 2 certification, 100% line-rate throughput, and zero packet loss over 48 hours.
