About
Toshiba Corporation's quantum-communications business, based at the Cambridge Research Laboratory in the UK and at Toshiba Digital Solutions in Japan, is the longest-running corporate QKD program. It began research in 1999 and now ships commercial products. The portfolio includes a Multiplexed QKD System that runs over the same fiber as conventional data and a Long-Distance QKD System for high-key-rate long-haul links. Toshiba is the QKD vendor behind BT's London metro network and JPMorgan Chase's Q-CAN production network. In March 2025, Toshiba announced that its commercial QKD systems natively integrate NIST-standardized post-quantum cryptography, delivering crypto-agile defense-in-depth in a single product. In January 2026, the company unveiled a satellite-grade QKD transmitter-receiver system, with a ground demonstration showing interoperation with terrestrial fiber QKD.
