About
QuantERA is a European Research Area Network (ERA-NET) funding programme dedicated to quantum sciences and technologies, coordinating national quantum research funding across 32 European countries. It is managed by the National Science Centre of Poland (NCN) in partnership with the European Commission, and it enables transnational quantum research projects by aligning national funding agencies to jointly support collaborative research teams. QuantERA II, running from 2021 to 2026, has a total budget of 40 million euros co-funded by the EU and participating national agencies. The programme covers the four quantum technology pillars: quantum communication, quantum computing and simulation, quantum sensing and metrology, and foundational quantum science. It funds 37 research projects in this second phase, connecting over 150 research groups across Europe. QuantERA complements the EU Quantum Flagship by funding fundamental and early-stage applied research that precedes the Flagship's larger-scale projects. It has supported foundational work in quantum error correction, quantum repeaters, quantum networks, and quantum sensing applications that was later scaled through Quantum Flagship projects. The programme coordinates with national quantum strategies across Europe and helps train the European quantum research workforce through its cross-border collaboration model.
