About
M Squared Lasers was a Glasgow-based photonics and quantum technology company founded in 2006 by Dr. Graeme Malcolm OBE and Dr. Gareth Maker. It specialized in laser, quantum, and photonics systems used in fundamental physics research. The company grew to roughly 100 employees, exported more than 90% of its products, and doubled in size every two years from 2012, reaching revenue of about 19 million pounds. M Squared's products enabled advances in quantum science, including the UK's first commercially viable quantum accelerometer, along with quantum clocks, quantum sensors, and quantum computing systems for industrial applications. The company pioneered the UK's first commercial quantum gravimeter and quantum accelerometer. Dr. Malcolm, awarded an OBE for services to Science and Innovation, regularly gave expert evidence on quantum technology to parliamentary committees and received numerous entrepreneurship awards. In August 2025, M Squared Lasers entered administration, and all 28 staff were laid off immediately. Joint administrators Alistair McAlinden and Geoff Jacobs of Interpath were appointed. The company cited COVID-19 pandemic supply chain disruptions and the Ukraine conflict as contributing factors. Assets, including the SolsTiS laser platform intellectual property, were put up for sale.
