The Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information Innsbruck (IQOQI-IBK) is a research institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OAW) located in Innsbruck, Austria. It is one of the world's premier trapped-ion quantum computing research centres and has produced foundational advances in quantum error correction, quantum simulation, and universal quantum gate operations that underpin the modern trapped-ion quantum computing industry. IQOQI Innsbruck was co-founded by Rainer Blatt and Peter Zoller, whose theoretical and experimental work established trapped-ion quantum computing as a leading platform. The institute demonstrated the first quantum byte, an eight-qubit entanglement, pioneered quantum teleportation with trapped ions, and achieved landmark results in quantum error correction and fault-tolerant quantum logic. Quantinuum, formerly Cambridge Quantum, and other trapped-ion companies draw directly from the foundational science developed at Innsbruck. IQOQI maintains close ties with the University of Innsbruck and the Institute for Theoretical Physics. Current research programmes include trapped-ion quantum processors for fault-tolerant quantum computing, quantum simulation of many-body physics, quantum networking with ion traps, and quantum-enhanced sensing. The institute participates in EU Quantum Flagship projects and the Austrian national quantum strategy, and it has trained a global generation of quantum physicists who have gone on to lead quantum computing research and companies worldwide.
