About
HSBC Holdings PLC is a British multinational universal bank and financial services holding company founded on March 3, 1865. The bank applies quantum computing to risk management, portfolio optimization, fraud detection, asset pricing, algorithmic trading, and secure tokenized asset transactions using quantum key distribution. It invests in post-quantum cryptography and quantum-safe communication networks, and collaborates with leading quantum companies including IBM and Quantinuum, working alongside JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs in quantum finance. HSBC has worked with Quantinuum since June 2023. In September 2024 it trialed the first application of quantum-secure technology for buying and selling tokenized physical gold. On September 25, 2025, HSBC and IBM announced what they described as the first known empirical evidence of the potential value of current quantum computers for solving real-world problems in algorithmic bond trading. Using a quantum-classical hybrid approach, the trial delivered up to a 34% improvement in predicting how likely a trade would be filled at a quoted price, demonstrating quantum advantage for a financial application. In December 2023, HSBC demonstrated QKD-secured AI-powered FX trading over 63km of fiber with BT, Toshiba, and AWS, the first live QKD-secured FX trade, protecting a EUR 30M EUR/USD scenario. Update 2026-04-28: Haiqu and HSBC jointly researched a method that reduces circuit depth for encoding probability distributions. Source: https://quantumzeitgeist.com/haiqus-method-cuts-circuit/
