The US Department of Energy (DOE) leads major quantum computing and quantum information science initiatives through its Office of Science, national laboratories, and research programs. It coordinates quantum research across institutions including Argonne, Oak Ridge, and Lawrence Berkeley National Labs, funds quantum computing testbeds, quantum network development, and quantum algorithm research for scientific computing, and oversees the National Quantum Information Science Research Centers. The DOE supports the National Quantum Initiative to advance US leadership in quantum technologies for energy, materials science, and scientific discovery. In March 2026, the DOE announced a $625M renewal of all 5 National Quantum Information Science (QIS) Research Centers for five additional years: C2QA, the Co-design Center for Quantum Advantage, at Brookhaven National Laboratory; SQMS, the Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems Center, at Fermilab; Q-NEXT at Argonne National Laboratory; QSA, the Quantum Systems Accelerator, at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory; and QSC, the Quantum Science Center, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The renewed investment sustains America's national quantum research infrastructure and supports continued US leadership in quantum computing and quantum sensing.
