About
Cisco Systems Inc. is a San Jose-based technology company founded in 1984. It develops quantum networking technology and quantum internet infrastructure through Cisco Quantum Labs, established at facilities in Santa Monica and San Jose. Cisco's quantum networking vision aims to accelerate practical quantum computing applications from decades to 5 to 10 years and to build a foundation for the quantum internet. In May 2025, Cisco formally opened its Quantum Labs facility in Santa Monica, unveiling several quantum technologies: a network-aware distributed quantum compiler that runs quantum algorithms across multiple networked processors, a vendor-agnostic quantum networking framework, and a prototype quantum entanglement chip developed with UC Santa Barbara. The chip generates up to 200 million high-fidelity entangled photon pairs per second at 1550nm, at room temperature, drawing under 1mW of power. Cisco also announced a compiler supporting distributed quantum error correction that works with any quantum computing technology, intended to enable scalable quantum data centers and quantum communication networks. In September 2025, Cisco expanded its quantum networking software portfolio with enhanced network orchestration for quantum key distribution networks, supporting enterprise-grade quantum-safe communications infrastructure and integration with existing network management systems for hybrid classical-quantum deployments. In March 2025, Cisco partnered with Nu Quantum and others in the Quantum Datacenter Alliance. In February 2026, Cisco provided the unified quantum networking software stack for Qunnect's GothamQ metro-scale demonstration in New York City, covering 17.6km of deployed commercial fiber, with a swapping rate of 5,400 entangled pairs per hour, 10,000 times previous benchmarks, and polarization fidelity above 99%. Update 2026-04-25: Cisco developed a Universal Quantum Switch prototype that routes entangled photons to connect quantum computers and sen
