About

Brookhaven National Laboratory is a US national laboratory founded in 1947, located in Upton, New York, and operating under the United States Department of Energy. Brookhaven leads the Co-design Center for Quantum Advantage (C2QA), one of five DOE National Quantum Information Science Research Centers established in 2020 and directed by Andrew Houck. C2QA brings together experts to co-design quantum hardware, software, and algorithms with the goal of achieving quantum advantage. The laboratory conducts quantum computing research across superconducting qubits, quantum algorithms, quantum networking, and quantum sensors. It operates quantum computing testbeds and collaborates with more than 1,500 experts across 115 academic, industry, and national science institutions. Brookhaven serves the quantum computing research community, government agencies, and industry partners that need fundamental quantum research, quantum algorithm development, and quantum hardware co-design, advancing toward practical quantum advantage for applications in physics, chemistry, materials science, and national security. In November 2025, the DOE renewed the C2QA center for a second five-year phase with $125M in funding, and C2QA-affiliated researchers reported tantalum-based superconducting qubits with coherence times beyond 1 millisecond, the longest reported for superconducting qubits.
