About
Alea Quantum is a Danish startup founded in March 2022 that develops optical quantum random number generators (QRNG), drawing on more than 20 years of research at the Technical University of Denmark's quantum information group and bigQ research center. Its QRNG uses laser diodes and detectors to form random numbers by measuring vacuum fluctuations of laser light, producing 100% genuine random numbers at 4 gigabytes per second. This makes it faster and more secure than systems based on mathematical algorithms. The technology measures 3 by 5 centimeters and serves cybersecurity and encryption vendors that need ultra-secure random number generation. Alea's technology has been tested by QTI (Quantum Telecommunication Italy) and by Danske Bank for quantum-secured data transfer. The EU granted DKK 7 million under the Digital Europe programme for further development toward a chip-scale device that integrates the laser diode and detector at micrometer scale for mass-market applications, including mobile phones. DTU holds the patent for the technology.
