Utah’s life-sciences and biotechnology sector could also benefit from advances in quantum computing for potential applications such as molecular simulation and drug discovery.These efforts are aligned with the federal strategy outlined in Executive Order 14413, “Ushering in the Next Frontier of Quantum Innovation,” signed by President Donald J. Trump on June 22, 2026. That order directs agencies to accelerate development and commercialization of quantum computing, sensing, and networking while strengthening domestic supply chains and the quantum workforce.The Utah Quantum Initiative sets out a coordinated set of priorities intended to convert existing research and industrial capacity into commercial activity, a skilled workforce, and stronger positioning for federal programs:• Strengthen core capabilities in quantum sensing, photonics, semiconductors, and high-performance computing• Build a quantum-ready workforce through education pathways and apprenticeships• Accelerate commercialization and support quantum-enabled companies and pilot projects• Coordinate pursuit of federal quantum funding and reinforce domestic supply chains• Develop a defense strategy centered on quantum sensing and communications• Increase public understanding of quantum technology and Utah’s role• Identify policy and funding recommendations with the Governor’s Office of Planning and Budget and legislative leaders Utah doesn’t need to build a quantum ecosystem from scratch — many of the pieces are already here. Our job is to connect our researchers, manufacturers, entrepreneurs, investors and workforce around a common strategy. No later than March 30, 2027, the Quantum Coordination Council is required to complete a statewide quantum landscape report mapping Utah’s research infrastructure, manufacturing capacity, and workforce assets, and to submit the report to the Governor and the Economic Development and Workforce Services Interim Committee. The executive order takes effect immediately and remains in effect through December 31, 2028.
