The National Science Foundation has renewed the NSF Quantum Leap Challenge Institute for Robust Quantum Simulation (NSF RQS), an effort in quantum research based at the University of Maryland and co-led by Duke University and Princeton University. The new five-year award is expected to total $37.5 million, launching a new phase of quantum simulation research. During its first five years, the institute developed new ways to verify quantum systems, reduce errors, and perform advanced quantum simulations, while building a network of researchers, educators, engineers, and students. The renewed award expands the institute’s scientific and educational programs and strengthens partnerships among universities, federal laboratories, and industry. Harvard University will join the collaboration, which already includes Yale University and the National Institute of Standards and Technology. As part of the NSF Quantum Leap Challenge Institutes program, the institute aims to accelerate advances in quantum information science through interdisciplinary research, education and workforce development. Researchers at the Duke Quantum Center will continue advancing quantum simulation, widely regarded as one of the most promising practical applications of quantum computing. These specialized simulators are designed to model complex quantum systems beyond the reach of conventional computers. “Quantum simulators enable us to study quantum systems the same way a wind tunnel allows us to test wings without building a whole airplane,” said Kenneth Brown, an engineering professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Looking ahead, the institute will focus on “quantum simulation engineering,” developing scalable technologies to address key scientific questions. The collaboration will also continue to support teacher workshops, and education programs to help prepare the next generation of the quantum workforce.
