QuantumDiamonds Plans €152M ($178.5M USD) Quantum Chip Inspection Facility in Munich QuantumDiamonds GmbH, a German company specializing in quantum sensing for semiconductor inspection, today announced a €152 million ($178.5 million USD) investment plan to establish a production facility in Munich, Germany. The facility will focus on manufacturing advanced chip testing systems and is viewed as a key strategic asset to strengthen European competitiveness in the global semiconductor industry. The project is expected to receive public support from the German federal and Bavarian governments under the European Chips Act. The investment addresses a critical challenge in the semiconductor industry: the plummeting yields and rising costs associated with the explosive demand for dense, high-performance AI chips. Conventional testing methods are struggling to keep pace, especially with increasingly complex 2.5D and 3D heterogeneous architectures. QuantumDiamonds’ QDM systems are designed to solve this by harnessing nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond to non-destructively map electrical current inside chip packages with micrometer precision, a capability necessary to visualize defects currently invisible to standard tools. This facility represents a strategic commitment to European technology sovereignty, aligning with the goal of the European Chips Act to double Europe’s global semiconductor production share to 20% by 2030. Following successful proof-of-concept projects with 9 of the 10 largest chip manufacturers in the world, QuantumDiamonds is transitioning from pilot deployments to volume production in Germany, with installations scheduled for early 2026 in the United States and Taiwan. The investment, supported by previous EIC Accelerator and SPRIN-D programs, aims to build domestic skills and retain value-chain steps within Europe. Read the full announcement here.
