Quantum World Congress Opens in College Park. Riverlane Buys the First Round

Quantum World Congress opened its 2026 edition Wednesday at The Hotel at the University of Maryland, moving the Greater Washington quantum convening out of Tysons and into College Park’s Discovery District for the first time.Connected DMV is operating the meeting with the Quantum Economic Development Consortium and the Quantum Industry Coalition. The official run is Sept. 23–25 at 7777 Baltimore Ave. After a Washington, D.C., launch and three years in Tysons, Virginia, the organizers are staging the Congress next to the University of Maryland’s Joint Quantum Institute, the Joint Center for Quantum Information and Computer Science, and the Quantum Technology Center.Registration opened at 7 a.m. The exhibition hall ran 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The 6th Annual International Forum Advancing Global Strategic Partnerships took the penthouse at Top of the 7s, with networking at 8 a.m. and program from 9 a.m. to noon.The rest of Wednesday stacked bootcamps on scale-out architectures, entanglement distribution, defense and space, national strategies, standards and metrology, Trusted Computing Group post-quantum work, workforce pipelines, and life-science use cases.

The Startup Pitch Competition presented by Booz Allen occupied Top of the 7s from 2:30 to 5 p.m., after a short awards block on the main stage.Then the official program handed the same penthouse to a less coherent form of networking.

Quantum World Congress posted that “the newest quantum neighbor in College Park is buying the first round,” and billed Quantum After Hours as the official happy hour, powered by Riverlane, 5–7 p.m. at Top of the 7s. The house line: “Come raise a glass to new neighbors, new connections, and everything being built next in quantum.”An invite-only 5th Annual International Dinner was listed off-site from 6–8 p.m., which is a polite way of saying the people with actual flags on their badges had a second seating. Everyone else got the official two-hour window to toast error correction with something that is not a decoder graph. Tomorrow’s keynote slate will not grade on a curve.On Sept. 17, Cambridge, U.K.–based Riverlane said it plans to open a U.S. headquarters in Discovery District Maryland, with office and laboratory space near the University of Maryland campus. The company already has a U.S. presence in Boston. Founder and CEO Steve Brierley tied the move to quantum error correction and to sitting “at the heart of an exceptional ecosystem of researchers, industry leaders and government partners working to advance quantum.” University of Maryland President Darryll J. Pines called the choice “a strong endorsement of the University of Maryland’s leadership in quantum research.”Riverlane also said it is establishing a strategic collaboration with UMD on quantum error correction research, student fellowships, teaching, and mentorship. The company’s announcement was timed to QWC. The official Thursday program lists Brierley for a keynote, “The Road to Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computing at Scale.” Buying the first round is cheaper than buying fault tolerance. The Embassy of Austria hosted a Global Quantum Strategies Overview pre-event Tuesday evening in Washington.Thursday’s published main-stage list is heavier than Wednesday’s: plenaries and keynotes from Microsoft’s Jason Zander, IBM’s Scott Crowder, Google’s William Oliver, Infleqtion’s Matthew Kinsella, Photonic’s Stephanie Simmons, QuEra’s Andy Ory, Rigetti’s Subodh Kulkarni, and others, plus the Global Industry Challenge awards. Featured speakers on the Congress roster also include NIST’s James Kushmerick, the Energy Department’s Anthony Pugliese, and Pines. Session assignments can still move; the program page says Thursday and Friday items continue to lock in.The field came to College Park to talk commercialization, policy, standards, and talent. Wednesday closed with the organizers putting a British error-correction shop behind the bar and asking the room to behave like neighbors. That is not a technical result.
