3 Quantum Stocks to Buy If You Already Have IonQ - The Motley Fool

Understand this faster with AI
Most IonQ (IONQ -0.24%) investors are bullish on the quantum theme and have no regard for standard valuation metrics like the P/E ratio. The leading quantum company reported a $1.87 billion loss in the second quarter but saw its revenue jump 287% year over year to $80.1 million. Investors are more focused on what IonQ will look like over the next 10 years than on how it will look in the next quarter. However, putting all your eggs in one basket may not be a prudent approach for a potential megatrend like quantum computing. People who have already accumulated shares of IonQ may want to take a closer look at these three quantum stocks. Image source: Getty Images.
Rigetti Computing Rigetti Computing (RGTI +0.73%) aims to build full-stack quantum computers that can solve the world's most advanced problems, and the U.S. government has come to support them. The company received $100 million in CHIPS Act funding, and the government now has an equity stake in the company. It also financially incentivizes the government to support Rigetti Computing even as losses pile up in financial results. According to Rigetti Computing's August 2026 investor presentation, the quantum industry can generate up to $850 billion in economic value by 2040, suggesting substantial potential for early entrants. Although the company only earned $5.1 million in Q2 and had a $28.1 million operating loss, Rigetti Computing is building a vital customer pipeline that can produce sizable growth once commercialization becomes widespread. Amazon (AMZN +1.94%), Microsoft (MSFT +0.65%), financial giants, and government agencies like NASA are some of Rigetti Computing's customers. Infleqtion Infleqtion (INFQ +1.24%) also builds quantum computers and has government customers. The company recently received $20 million from NASA to assist with the world's first quantum gravity mission. The mission's objective is to fly the world's first space-based quantum gravity sensor. However, it's not just the government. Infleqtion also has a long-term partnership with Nvidia (NVDA -0.03%) to integrate quantum into AI data centers. Hybrid data centers make more sense than creating facilities exclusively for AI and quantum, respectively. The build of an AI-exclusive data center has different requirements from that of a quantum-exclusive data center. A hybrid approach requires less capital and optimizes each facility for AI and quantum computing.
Infleqtion Chief Technology Officer Pranav Gokhale touted the company's neutral atom technology as the superior choice due to "its inherent scalability." D-Wave Quantum D-Wave Quantum (QBTS +0.84%) is a dual-platform quantum computing company that combines hardware and software that can perform complex tasks. Like the other companies on this list, D-Wave Quantum's revenue doesn't come anywhere close to its market cap, but business is surging. The company reported a 1,120% year-over-year increase in first-half bookings. It now has $35.5 million in the pipeline. Commercial demand has been picking up, with Fortune 2,000 companies accounting for 47.7% of total revenue in the second quarter. The paper cited dual-rail cavity qubits as "an attractive path for achieving fault-tolerant quantum computing." D-Wave's experiment showed that its dual-rail quilts can achieve low error rates while maintaining a favorable error hierarchy. It essentially means that mistakes are easier to detect and fix. Technological breakthroughs like these can set D-Wave Quantum apart from its competitors. These types of advancements also aid the quantum industry as a whole, which can move D-Wave Quantum and other companies closer to commercialization. The pure financial numbers don't make much sense from a valuation perspective, but that's the main story with all pure-play quantum stocks. Investors must consider what these stocks can do in five to 10 years instead of how their balance sheets look right now.
