Cisco Blogs Networking PQC for Dummies—Cisco Special Edition: Why we wrote it Albert Chiang Networking September 22, 2026 • 2 min read • 4 min listen Quantum computing is rapidly evolving from a theoretical concept to a practical reality, promising revolutionary advances across many fields. However, this new technology also poses significant risks to the security of data transmitted over networks today. Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) for Dummies—Cisco Edition was written to demystify these complex topics, explaining the basics of quantum computing, its potential benefits and dangers, and how Cisco is pioneering solutions to protect data and devices in the quantum era. Learning quantum computing and its dual impact Quantum computers leverage principles such as superposition and entanglement to perform calculations far beyond the capabilities of classical computers. This power holds the promise of breakthroughs in medicine, artificial intelligence, optimization, and more. Yet, the same capabilities threaten current cryptographic methods that secure our digital communications. Quantum computers could break widely used encryption algorithms, exposing sensitive data. The “harvest now, decrypt later” threat One of the most pressing concerns is the “harvest now, decrypt later” (HNDL) attack. Cyber adversaries can capture encrypted data today and store it, waiting until quantum computers become powerful enough to decrypt it. This means that information considered secure now could be compromised in the future, putting privacy and security at risk. Post-quantum cryptography: A quantum-resistant solution Prior to joining Cisco, my knowledge of quantum computing was limited to vague memories of wave and particle theory from my school days and fragmented images of quantum hardware found online. After several weeks of in-depth study, which included reading publications from Cisco Research and the Cisco Quantum Lab, I began to gain a practical understanding of quantum computing and its implications for network security. Engaging with peers across and beyond the networking industry, I realized many shared this knowledge gap. To help others avoid the lengthy learning curve I experienced, we partnered with the “For Dummies” team to document this journey and demystify the future of quantum computing and its impact on network security. Cisco’s full-stack PQC resilient infrastructure approach Cisco’s commitment goes beyond encrypting data. They employ a full-stack PQC strategy that also protects devices themselves. This includes quantum-safe secure boot processes and authentication methods that verify the integrity and authenticity of hardware and software. By securing both data and devices, Cisco provides comprehensive protection against emerging quantum threats. Why a “Dummies” book? Quantum computing and PQC are inherently complex subjects filled with technical jargon. Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) for Dummies—Cisco Special Edition breaks down these topics into simple, clear explanations accessible to a broad audience. It helps IT professionals, business leaders, and anyone interested in the topic to understand why quantum threats matter, how PQC works, and what Cisco is doing to safeguard the future of networking—all without requiring a deep technical background. Enjoy this “Dummies” book The book aims to teach readers about the importance of preparing for the quantum future. As quantum computing continues to advance, organizations must adopt quantum-safe technologies to protect their data and infrastructure. Cisco’s leadership in PQC and device protection ensures that customers can confidently navigate the quantum shift with robust security solutions. Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) for Dummies—Cisco Special Edition serves as an essential guide to understanding the quantum revolution’s impact on cybersecurity and how Cisco is innovating to protect networks and devices from quantum-enabled threats. It simplifies complex concepts, highlights the urgency of quantum-safe cryptography, and showcases Cisco’s comprehensive approach to securing the digital future.
