Neutral Atom continues to shine in the modality race

Paper published yesterday 9/15: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-026-77764-x Paper published last month: https://arxiv.org/abs/2608.17913 The highlight from the first paper is that they “report the observation of individually trapped circular Rydberg atoms with lifetimes of more than 10 milliseconds, two orders of magnitude longer-lived than the established low angular momentum orbitals“. The second paper linked discusses how the researchers were able to achieve a fidelity improvement of 5.3x by optimising atom loss in neutral-atom quantum error correction systems. There has been recent developments around neutral atom in the past 3 months. My speculation is that within the next 5 years competition with China will heat up and China will hone in on NA modalities as we are already seeing signs(https://thequantuminsider.com/2026/05/08/china-claims-first-dual-core-neutral-atom-quantum-computer/) There will be a time where the greatest quantum bottleneck shifts from gate fidelity to scalability via hardware restrictions as well as manufacturing and engineering(think optical tweezers and vacuum chamber manufacturing). A lot of folks think software will always be the most profound obstacle holding quantum back but I think AI will help ease some of the algorithm issues.
