India Highlights 6G and Quantum Communications as Technology Priorities

Insider BriefIndia has an opportunity to create an impact in sixth-generation (6G) technology, quantum communications, and quantum security, Minister of State for Communications Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani said on Tuesday, speaking at the 43rd foundation day of the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT).“We have the opportunity to impact 6G, rather than just reading the standards. We have an opportunity to write those standards at this time because of the government push. We also have an opportunity to make an impact in quantum communications and quantum security,” the minister said.At the event, C-DoT, a public sector telecom research and development organisation under the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), unveiled nearly 14 quantum products, the Economic Times reported.India has contributed to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) under the International Mobile Technology (IMT) 2030 framework, also referred to as 6G, for the inclusion of “ubiquitous connectivity” as one of six usage scenarios, along with coverage, interoperability, and sustainability as capabilities of 6G technology.The government is also supporting the active participation of Indian stakeholders in international standardisation bodies including the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), ITU, and oneM2M through the DoT’s Technology Development and Investment Promotion (TDIP) scheme, according to the publication.Strategic measures including the Sanchar Saathi application and the Financial Fraud Risk Indicator have helped prevent an estimated ₹4,000 crore in cyber fraud losses, Pemmasani said. “Sanchar Saathi app…and with financial fraud risk indicator, so far, an estimated ₹4,000 crores of cyber fraud has been prevented,” he added.A Tata Consultancy Services (TCS)-led consortium, comprising C-DoT as core partner and Tejas Networks as the radio access network vendor, has deployed an indigenous 4G technology stack for Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) at one lakh sites nationwide, the Economic Times reported.
