Creotech Quantum S.A., a company listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange, will build high-sensitivity photon detectors for the European Space Agency in a EUR 2.33 million project, with EUR 1.2 million allocated to the Polish firm’s work. The project focuses on Superconducting Nanowire Single Photon Detector (SNSPD) technology for secure quantum and optical communications systems. “Signing another project for the European Space Agency confirms our expertise in advanced quantum technologies,” says Dr. Anna Kamińska, CEO of Creotech Quantum S.A., as the collaboration aims to advance the technology toward commercialization and deployment in sectors like space, telecommunications, and defense. Creotech Quantum’s HRQKD Project Advances SNSPD Technology for ESA The HRQKD project, formally titled “Single Photon Detector Based on Superconducting Nanowire (SNSPD) Technology for Laser Communication and Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) Applications [HRQKD]”, will push the detector’s technology readiness level to TRL 5, demonstrating functionality in an environment mirroring intended industrial applications. This represents a critical step beyond prior proof-of-concept prototypes developed under two previous ESA contracts with the same team. The project’s EUR 2.33 million total value allocates EUR 1.2 million directly to Creotech Quantum for its work designing, manufacturing, and testing high-sensitivity detectors. These SNSPDs, or Superconducting Nanowire Single Photon Detectors, are essential components for both secure quantum key distribution and advanced optical communication systems. The detectors will be important for receiving quantum signals at ground stations communicating with satellites, a key element in establishing secure communication networks. The technology aims to facilitate long-distance optical communication, even in scenarios with extremely weak signals, such as those expected from lunar bases or missions to the outer solar system. Creotech Quantum will lead the project consortium, taking responsibility for developing electronics and software components, conducting rigorous testing, and formulating a product development strategy over the 24-month implementation period. The development of these detectors addresses a growing need for secure communication infrastructure within Europe, supported by initiatives like EuroQCI, ARTES, SAGA, and ScyLight. EuroQCI specifically aims to establish a European infrastructure for secure quantum communications, encompassing both terrestrial networks and satellite links, with the IRIS² program representing a key next step. The ability to securely exchange cryptographic keys through QKD, facilitated by these detectors, is a primary driver for this investment. Beyond QKD, the SNSPDs are designed to enhance optical communication capabilities, enabling faster and more efficient data transmission. Traditional radio-frequency systems are reaching their bandwidth limits, particularly for space-based communications, making optical communication a vital alternative. These detectors will allow for the reception of extremely weak signals, extending the range and reliability of these systems. The project’s success will position Creotech Quantum to further refine its expertise in quantum technologies and establish a foundation for commercializing products targeted at the space, defense, and telecommunications industries. The HRQKD project is not simply about improving detector sensitivity; it is about integrating a crucial technology into a broader European strategy for secure and high-bandwidth communications. Signing another project for the European Space Agency confirms our expertise in advanced quantum technologies and the growing position of Creotech Quantum within the European ecosystem in this sector.
