About

The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) is Japan's largest public research organisation and a key institution in Japan's quantum technology strategy. AIST operates the Quantum Information Research Centre (QuIC) and is a central partner in Japan's national quantum computing roadmap managed by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). AIST quantum research spans quantum computing hardware, including superconducting qubits and photonic systems, quantum sensing, quantum materials, and quantum software. AIST hosts one of Japan's national quantum computers, accessible through the Research Institute for Quantum Information Science and Technology (RIQ), and contributes to Japan's goal of deploying 10 million quantum users by 2030. It collaborates with RIKEN, NTT, Fujitsu, and Toshiba on Japan's quantum ecosystem development. AIST's quantum sensing work includes precision atomic clocks, magnetometers, and gravity sensors with applications in infrastructure monitoring, resource exploration, and autonomous navigation. AIST participates in Japan's flagship quantum technology programmes, including the Q-LEAP programme administered by JST, and contributes to international standardisation through ISO and IEC quantum technology working groups. AIST operates the NMIJ (National Metrology Institute of Japan) division, which develops quantum-based measurement standards equivalent to the NPL and PTB roles in the UK and Germany. Update 2025-05-30: QuEra Computing installed its first quantum computer outside its labs at AIST in Japan for new research.
