Vexlum Establishes UK Operations and Appoints Dr. Stefan Truppe as Managing Director High-power semiconductor laser developer Vexlum has announced the establishment of a dedicated R&D laboratory in London alongside the appointment of Dr. Stefan Truppe as Managing Director of Vexlum UK. Spun out from Tampere University in Finland, the company specializes in Vertical-External-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser (VECSEL) technology, producing high-power, single-frequency laser engines across visible and deep-ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths. The expansion establishes a permanent UK research and technical validation footprint, directly embedding Vexlum into the UK’s £2.5 billion National Quantum Strategy. The expansion comes in response to growing demand for Vexlum’s flagship VXL laser system. Operating as a compact two-liter laser engine designed to replace bulky optical instrumentation racks, the platform serves as a critical light source for neutral-atom and trapped-ion quantum computing architectures, as well as ultracold matter research and semiconductor metrology. The new London facility will house laser testing, configuration, and validation equipment, allowing Vexlum to provide localized engineering support and joint product development rather than operating solely as a sales office. Dr. Stefan Truppe joins Vexlum from Imperial College London, where he will maintain his position as an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics alongside his new corporate leadership role. Truppe brings extensive technical expertise in deep-UV laser cooling of atomic gases and diatomic molecules, aligning with Vexlum’s push to eliminate laser infrastructure bottlenecks in quantum sensing and QPU scaling. Vexlum will continue to maintain its core semiconductor wafer fabrication and primary system manufacturing at its facilities in Finland.
