The transition from classical to quantum internet remains in early phases, with foundational quantum networks now operational in research hubs like the Netherlands and China. Kozlowski highlighted quantum key distribution (QKD) as the most mature application, already securing critical infrastructure, though scalability and distance limitations persist. Collaboration between academia, governments, and private sectors is accelerating, with EU and U.S. initiatives driving standardization and interoperability for future quantum networks. The primary challenge is hardware—reliable quantum repeaters and memory nodes are essential to extend range beyond current 100–500 km limits before widespread adoption.
