For quantum computing to reach its potential, logical qubits will require robust error correction. The race is on to build "fault-tolerant" quantum computers that scale up and correct errors, allowing for complex, sustained calculations. There are many approaches to quantum computing, including qubit technologies that use superconducting, ion-trapped, annealing and photonic methods.

Quantum Computing Stocks: Tech Giants Loom While IBM and Alphabet's (GOOGL) Google are pursuing superconducting-based quantum technology, IonQ (IONQ) is developing trapped ion systems, the UBS report noted. "Who will win out will depend largely on the modality of qubit that succeeds first," said UBS analyst Madeleine Jenkins in a report. "As it stands we see superconducting and trapped ion as the most advanced, with Google leading in software/quantum error correction. Microsoft (MSFT) and Amazon.com (AMZN) are more diversified, offering mixed modalities (from pure plays) over cloud computing. Public pure plays with thematic exposure include IonQ, D-Wave, and Rigetti, alongside private companies such as IQM and PsiQuantum." JPMorgan, Jefferies, Evercore ISI, Cantor Fitzgerald and Mizuho Securities in 2025 initiated coverage on some quantum companies while Barclays and Bank of America published in-depth reports on the emerging technology.

Quantum Computing Stocks: Xanadu, Infleqtion So far in 2026, D-Wave Quantum (RGTI) shares have climbed roughly 13%. Quantum Computing (QUBT) has popped about 14%. Quantum computing stocks have been volatile since late 2024 when a Google announcement sparked a big rally. However, uncertainty over commercialization and competition from tech industry giants have been key issues. Nvidia (NVDA) has offered differing views.
