Qilimanjaro Quantum Tech has opened what’s claimed to be Europe’s first multimodal quantum-powered data center in Barcelona, Spain, gearing up to offer cloud-based quantum computing as a service. The company said the facility will house up to 10 quantum computers and represents Europe’s introduction to multimodal quantum infrastructure. The quantum startup launched in 2019, developing analog chips based on “fluxoniums” (a type of superconducting qubit) that allow the company to build integrated, error-resilient quantum computers. The company stated that the center will serve thousands of users, offering access to both digital and analog quantum computers. The quantum platforms will enable users to solve complex problems, such as simulating molecules, materials, and physical systems, as well as explore new methods for training AI models and solving large-scale optimization problems. “This center is much more than a technological facility; it is an open ecosystem where industry, research, and public institutions can prepare for the future,” Qilimanjaro CEO Marta Estarellas said in a statement. “Quantum computing is not a distant promise; it is already transforming the way we understand innovation.” The center received support from Europe’s Department of Business and Labour, through ACCIO (Agency for Business Competitiveness), as well as support from the SETT (Spanish Society for Technological Transformation). A handful of other quantum-based data centers have popped up around the world. In September, OQC, Digital Reality and Nvidia launched an AI data center at Digital Reality’s JFK10 facility in NYC. It was one of the first data centers explicitly marketed as combining quantum hardware with GPU-based AI infrastructure. QMare and QuiX Quantum created a hybrid quantum-classical computing data center in Enschede, Netherlands, in 2023. IBM launched its Quantum System Two at the IBM-Euskadi Quantum Computational Center in San Sebastian, Spain, this month.
