New York University (NYU) has announced the formation of the NYU Quantum Institute (NYUQI), a new initiative intended to position the university as a major player in the growing field of quantum technology. The Institute is led by Professor Javad Shabani, an expert in quantum materials and superconducting devices. The formation of the NYUQI is designed to foster cross-disciplinary collaboration, bringing together experts from physics, engineering, materials science, computer science, biology, chemistry, and medicine. Juan de Pablo, Executive Vice President for Global Science and Technology at NYU, noted that the Institute aims to translate discoveries into deployable systems by moving beyond fragmented collaboration toward an integrated ecosystem. Quantum applications are already emerging in New York City, where Qunnect CEO Noel Goddard confirmed that the company, in collaboration with NYU, has deployed metro-scale, entanglement-based quantum networks on commercial fiber in Manhattan and Brooklyn. This deployment is the first of its kind in the city. The NYUQI will serve as a hub for both research and workforce development, which includes a recently launched MS in Quantum Science and Technology program.
