Quantum computing leader IonQ has agreed to acquire U.S. semiconductor manufacturer SkyWater Technology in a $1.8 billion deal, per Wall Street Journal reports. The move marks IonQ’s largest acquisition to date.
The deal, announced in January 2026, aims to vertically integrate IonQ’s quantum processor production by securing SkyWater’s domestic chip fabrication capabilities. SkyWater operates a Minnesota-based foundry specializing in advanced nodes.
IonQ seeks to accelerate quantum hardware development by controlling its supply chain, reducing reliance on third-party manufacturers. SkyWater’s expertise in radiation-hardened and specialty chips aligns with quantum computing’s unique demands.
Analysts view the acquisition as a strategic counter to competitors like IBM and Google, which also invest heavily in proprietary quantum chip production. Regulatory approval remains pending.
The transaction underscores growing consolidation in quantum tech as firms race to commercialize fault-tolerant systems. IonQ shares rose 8% in pre-market trading following the announcement.
