Florida Atlantic University has made history after signing an agreement with D-Wave Quantum Inc., a quantum computing company, to install an Advantage2 quantum computer on the Boca Raton campus, becoming the first university in Florida to do so. Gisele Galoustian, senior media relations director, said the computer will be located in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, the process is led by FAU’s College of Engineering and Computer Science and the College of Science, which aim to boost FAU’s research. “There are not many quantum computers around the world that we can study or do research on,” said Bardia Taghavi, a PhD student studying cryptography. Taghavi was ecstatic about the partnership between FAU and D-Wave, specifically the opportunities for students that came along with it. He was especially excited that D-Wave Quantum Inc. is moving its headquarters from Los Angeles to Boca Raton. “That’s a very good opportunity for students to work with their company,” said Taghavi. D-Wave’s communications team expressed enthusiasm to the University Press via email about students having on-site access and what that might mean for the future. “That on-site access will facilitate experimentation, support research, and enable FAU to explore complex computational problems that can be too difficult or impractical for classical computing systems to solve,” the team wrote. “It will enable the university to explore use cases in areas including optimization, materials science, artificial intelligence, and much more.” According to D-Wave, the company plans to “support academic research, joint projects, hackathons, and ideation workshops focused on real-world quantum applications.” The company is also looking to create a “D-Wave Quantum Applications Academy” at FAU and offer paid internships to students. FAU’s R1 status also played a role in D-Wave’s decision to partner with them. “That combination of academic commitment, regional momentum, and strong public-sector support made FAU a natural partner,” said D-Wave.
