Every Quantum Strategy Needs Solid Data Behind It By Doug Finke Imagine you are hiking deep in the woods and suddenly realize you’ve lost your map, your cell phone is dead, and you forgot to bring a compass. While few people are actually careless enough to end up in such a precarious position, we often see a similar lack of preparation in the professional world. Whether it is a corporation, an investor, a government, or an individual plotting a career path, many attempt to journey through the complicated world of quantum technology without seeking the complete and accurate data necessary to guide their strategy. Instead, they rely on guesswork and intuition. The Danger of Intuition-Based Strategy Relying solely on intuition is a significant mistake. Without a foundation of solid data, leaders often make poor decisions fueled by: Missing key pieces of information Out-of-date or obsolete data Misinterpreted information Personal cognitive biases The most effective strategies are built on comprehensive data that accounts for all internal and external forces impacting the organization. This includes preparing for various “what-if” scenarios and threats, such as: Economic Shifts: A major recession resulting in a “quantum winter.” Technological Leaps: Unanticipated breakthroughs that advance the industry by years. Market Changes: The entry of unexpected new competitors. Logistics: Major supply chain shortages of key materials or components. AI Integration: Whether the continued growth of AI will positively or negatively impact quantum progress. The Path to Actionable Insights In the quantum sector, a robust strategy requires data from diverse areas, including hardware roadmaps, software developments, competitor moves, use cases, investment trends, and global economic factors. Assembling this volume of data is nearly impossible for a single company or government to do alone.
Global Quantum Intelligence (GQI) has been dedicated to this mission since 2015, maintaining a data warehouse containing gigabytes of quantum-specific data to provide a basis for analysis. However, raw data is only the beginning. To obtain wisdom from the data and create actionable insights, data must be collated, analyzed, and viewed through a structured framework. By utilizing specialized frameworks organizations can better understand how different pieces of the ecosystem interact. Here is a summary of some of the frameworks that GQI uses in our work. CategorySpecific Frameworks & Focus AreasQuantum Value ChainIncludes Quantum Taxonomy, Quantum Supply Chain analysis, and Market Sizing to define the ecosystem.Quantum Computing (QC)Breaks down the technology into the QC Stack (Bottom, Mid, and Top-Stack) to track challenges and progress.CommercializationAnalyzes Commercial Maturity, Ecosystems, Target Markets, and various QC Business/Deployment Models.Quantum ApplicationsFocuses on Use Case Discovery (by algorithm and industry), Quantum Software, and Quantum Sensing.Security & ThreatsEvaluates the Quantum Threat timeline, Quantum Cryptography, PQC (Post-Quantum Cryptography), and QKD (Quantum Key Distribution). Why a Data-Based Approach Wins While developing a strategy based on data requires more time and effort than relying on gut instinct, the benefits are substantial: Progress Monitoring: It helps formulate Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to track your journey. Early Warning: KPIs act as a signal to modify your strategy if things go off-track. Contingency Planning: It helps identify alternate plans before they are needed. Resource Management: It allows you to quantify priorities when facing conflicting resource demands. Evidence-Based Persuasion: It provides a powerful way to convince colleagues to pursue a course of action using facts rather than opinions. No strategy offers a 100% guarantee of success. However, moving from a “best guess” to a “calculated risk” approach of strategy development significantly improves your odds. Don’t Gamble. Know.
