Chinese researchers at the University of Science and Technology of China have reached a significant milestone in quantum computing, becoming the first team outside the US to achieve the fault-tolerant threshold. Their superconducting quantum computer, Zuchongzhi 3.2, was able to correct errors more effectively, making the system more stable. The results, published in Physical Review Letters, show that the team used microwave-based control instead of the hardware-intensive methods used by Google.
Physicist Joseph Emerson from the University of Waterloo, who was not involved in the study, called the experiment impressive but said it is still far from practical use.
