Chile Government Prioritizes Quantum Sovereignty with 2035 Vision

The Chilean government is prioritizing quantum technology development with a new National Strategy. This roadmap focuses on strengthening the country’s technological sovereignty and promoting a sustainable innovation model. The strategy coordinates science, industry, and government to ensure the benefits of quantum technologies contribute to Chile’s social well-being and security. Chile’s 2025-2035 National Quantum Technologies Strategy Vision Chile’s 2025-2035 National Quantum Technologies Strategy was informed by a collaborative process beginning in April 2024.

An Advisory Commission, convened by the Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge, and Innovation, delivered a diagnostic report highlighting the necessity of a coordinated national approach to quantum technology development. This followed the model of the National Policy on Artificial Intelligence, aiming for a long-term vision for the field. The strategy’s timeline aligns with the United Nations’ declaration of 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technologies, offering a global context for national efforts. In March 2025, an Expanded Expert Roundtable gathered input from diverse sectors—academia, industry, government, and civil society—to refine the strategy’s core pillars and technical proposals. These discussions shaped guidelines for responsible integration into the emerging quantum agenda. Governance, Talent, and Infrastructure as Enabling Factors Chile’s National Quantum Technologies Strategy identifies specific enabling factors crucial for success, beginning with a strong governance structure. The strategy emphasizes the need for an institutional framework and regulatory guidelines to guide development, while also addressing defense and national security considerations within the quantum realm. This coordinated approach, mirroring the existing National Policy on Artificial Intelligence, seeks to ensure long-term benefits and responsible integration of these technologies. Talent development and strategic infrastructure are also key components of the strategy. These initiatives aim to build upon existing scientific capabilities and promote knowledge transfer into key productive sectors, positioning Chile for a leading role in the quantum revolution.
