A major reorganization merges Amazon’s AI, custom silicon, and quantum computing divisions into a single unit, consolidating its next-gen tech under one leadership structure. The move aims to accelerate innovation by integrating AGI research, Nova AI models, and hardware like Graviton and Trainium chips. Peter DeSantis, a 27-year AWS veteran, will lead the new organization, reporting directly to CEO Andy Jassy. His focus shifts from utility computing to unifying AI, silicon, and quantum efforts, optimizing cross-technology development cycles. Pieter Abbeel, a prominent AI researcher, now heads Amazon’s frontier model team while retaining his robotics role. The change follows the departure of Rohit Prasad, who led Nova and AGI initiatives for two years. The reorganization follows Amazon’s recent Nova 2 AI model launch at re:Invent, signaling deeper investment in enterprise AI. Custom silicon growth and cloud infrastructure integration are key drivers behind the structural shift. Jassy framed the move as strategic, emphasizing unified leadership to deliver advanced capabilities. The restructuring positions Amazon to compete aggressively in AI, quantum, and silicon against rivals like Microsoft and Google.
