U.S. wheat futures showed mixed midday trading on April 8, 2026, with Chicago soft red wheat rising fractionally while Kansas City hard red and Minneapolis spring wheat fell by 2-3 cents. Crop Progress data revealed only 35% of U.S. winter wheat rated good/excellent—below analyst estimates (42%) and last year’s 48%—marking the 7th weakest start since 1990 per the Brugler500 index. Analysts expect USDA’s April WASDE report to cut U.S. ending wheat stocks by 8 million bushels to 923 million, reflecting tighter supplies amid weaker crop conditions. Russia’s wheat crop was revised up to 88.7 MMT (+1.2 MMT), while EU exports hit 18 MMT (July-April), surpassing last year’s pace by 1.21 MMT, signaling strong global competition. Spring wheat planting lagged at 2%—matching the five-year average—but winter wheat heading (7%) exceeded the 5% norm, hinting at uneven regional progress.
