Japan pledged $36 billion for U.S. energy and mineral projects in Texas, Ohio, and Georgia under a new trade deal, marking the first tranche of a $550 billion commitment to boost American-based investments. The largest project is Ohio’s $33 billion Portsmouth Powered Land natural gas facility, operated by SoftBank’s SB Energy, set to generate 9.2 gigawatts—called the "largest natural gas plant in history" by U.S. officials. Japan will finance a $2.1 billion Texas GulfLink deepwater crude export terminal, expected to handle $30 billion in annual U.S. oil exports at full capacity, developed by Sentinel Midstream. A $600 million Georgia synthetic diamond grit plant, run by De Beers’ Element Six, will supply critical industrial materials for U.S. manufacturing, citing national security and economic resilience as key drivers. The deal reduces Japanese import tariffs to 15%, with leaders framing it as a strategic alliance to enhance mutual economic security and growth through high-impact infrastructure projects.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said the projects strengthen the Japan-U.S. alliance and were expected to bring increased sales and business expansion for Japanese companies."We believe these initiatives truly embody the purpose of this Strategic Investment Initiative, namely the promotion of mutual benefit between Japan and the United States, the enhancement of economic security, and the promotion of economic growth," Takaichi said in a post on X, according to a Google translation.By far the largest investment is a natural gas facility in Ohio that's expected to generate 9.2 gigawatts of power.U.S.
