A person holds a smartphone displaying the Kalshi app.Getty ImagesKey FactsArtem Kaptur is accused of trading roughly $4,000 on YouTube streaming markets, where bets can be placed on things like what MrBeast will say in his next video or who will win "Beast Games," the creator's reality competition series.Kalshi’s internal systems reportedly flagged Kaptur after he had “near-perfect trading success on markets with low odds,” and that several users also flagged suspicious activity.The revelation is the first time Kalshi has publicly revealed the results of an investigation into market manipulation on its website, and the company has fined Kaptur more than $20,000 and reported his bets to federal regulators for insider trading. Kalshi also announced Wednesday that it has suspended Kyle Langford, a 24-year-old Republican running for governor in California, for allegedly betting $200 on his own gubernatorial bid.Langford was fined $2,246 and suspended for five years.

The website is one of many that popped up allowing users to bet in an event-based prediction market after the Supreme Court legalized online gambling in 2018. Sports betting is the most popular subsector of the market but platforms like Kalshi and Polymarket, which offer specialized prediction markets, have exploded in popularity, with users able to bet on real-world events like politics, pop culture and awards and economic movements. Kalshi's monthly active users reportedly boomed from 600,000 to 5.1 million between the start and end of 2025, and a funding round at the end of the year valued the company at $11 billion. Websites like Kalshi are the subjects of dozens of federal lawsuits arguing they should be treated as federally regulated financial exchanges, similarly to state-licensed sportsbooks.
