Lean hog futures rose 20–60 cents Friday, with February contracts gaining $3.07 for the week, signaling bullish momentum despite a $3.06 drop in the national average negotiated hog price to $83.17. The CME Lean Hog Index climbed to $85.05, up 45 cents, while managed money increased net long positions by 3,393 contracts to 95,329, reflecting renewed investor confidence in pork markets. USDA’s pork cutout value rose $1.36 to $97.00 per cwt, driven by a $7.52 surge in belly prices, though loin and rib primals declined, highlighting mixed demand across pork cuts. Federally inspected hog slaughter fell to 2.536 million head, down 33,000 from the prior week and 87,899 year-over-year, suggesting supply constraints amid reduced processing activity. April and May 2025 hog futures closed higher at $92.15 and $96.025, respectively, extending gains as traders anticipate tighter supplies and potential price support in coming months.
