⚡ Quantum Brief
SSR Mining shares surged 11% on March 31, 2026, after gold prices spiked and the company announced a $1.5 billion cash deal to sell an 80% stake in its Turkish mine, reducing geopolitical risk exposure. The stock’s rise also reflects investor approval of management’s strategy, including a new share buyback plan allowing repurchase of up to 10% of outstanding shares to reduce dilution and boost value. Gold’s recent correlation with equity markets—driven by speculative inflows—undermines its traditional safe-haven status, tying SSR Mining’s performance to broader market trends rather than independent gold price movements. The Turkey divestiture shifts focus to SSR’s lower-risk Americas assets, strengthening its balance sheet with $1.5 billion in cash while exiting a volatile region amid rising geopolitical tensions. Despite short-term speculation, gold’s long-term fundamentals remain solid, supporting SSR Mining’s operational pivot and strategic financial moves to enhance shareholder returns.

By Lee Samaha – Mar 31, 2026 at 1:01PM ESTKey PointsManagement is derisking the stock and also aims to reduce the share count. There's a lot of speculative money in gold right now, but the long-term fundamentals look sound. Shares in gold miner SSR Mining (SSRM +11.03%) rose by 8% by 12 a.m. today. The move comes as gold prices spiked, but investors shouldn't lose sight of the fact that equity markets did so as well. In addition, investors are warming to the company's management, recently signing a definitive share purchase agreement to sell a 80% stake in a mine in Turkey for $1.5 billion in cash. A higher gold price, but also a higher correlation Few investors will complain about a higher share price. Still, there's one thing to consider here: correlation. As recently discussed, a lot of speculative money has flowed into gold and silver over the last couple of years, which is likely why gold is often trading in line with the markets this year. Image source: Getty Images. In short, it appears investors are liquidating gold positions and treating it like any other correlated asset class. That's fair enough, but it means that gold is unlikely to be the kind of haven investment many investors hoped it would be when other asset classes are sold off. That's not to say it won't decouple, but for now it looks correlated with equity markets, at least until some of the more speculative money exits the trade. All told, if the gold price moves with equity markets and SSR Mining's stock moves with gold, then the stock will tend to move with the broader equity markets. Throw in the recent announcement of a "Normal Course Issuer Bid" allowing the company to purchase 10% of its total issued and outstanding common shares for cancellation, and there's a lot to like about the gold miner in 2026.Read NextMar 27, 2026 •By Neha ChamariaWhy SSR Mining Stock Is Flying This Week (It's Not Gold Price)Mar 25, 2026 •By Eric VolkmanWhy SSR Mining Stock Shined Like Gold TodayMar 22, 2026 •By Courtney Carlsen3 Reasons SSR Mining Stock Is Undervalued Right NowMar 19, 2026 •By Reuben Gregg BrewerShould You Buy the Dip On SSR Mining Stock?Mar 18, 2026 •By Neha ChamariaWhy SSR Mining Stock Slumped on WednesdayMar 11, 2026 •By Rich SmithWhy SSR Mining Stock Dropped TodayAbout the AuthorLee Samaha is a contributing Stock Market Analyst at The Motley Fool covering industrials, electricals, energy, materials, transportation, and infrastructure stocks.
