US-Iran peace talks collapsed over the weekend, prompting President Trump to impose a full naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, escalating Middle East tensions and triggering safe-haven demand for the US dollar. The dollar index rose 0.15% despite weak US economic data, including a 3.6% drop in March existing home sales to a 9-month low, as geopolitical risks overshadowed domestic economic concerns. Crude oil surged 4%, pressuring the euro and yen due to their heavy energy import dependence, while the ECB and BOJ delayed expected rate hikes amid uncertainty from the US-Iran conflict. Gold and silver fell as stronger dollar and higher bond yields outweighed safe-haven demand, though losses were limited by central bank buying, including China’s 17th consecutive monthly gold reserve increase. Markets now price a 2% chance of a Fed rate hike this month, with expectations shifting toward a 25-basis-point cut in 2026, contrasting with potential ECB and BOJ tightening.
