Cotton futures surged Friday, with May, July, and December 2026 contracts rising 42 to 70 points, closing at 69.83, 72.08, and 74.33 cents/lb respectively, amid broader commodity gains. US export sales lagged at 9.556 million bales—7% below last year—reaching just 85% of USDA projections, trailing the 98% historical average pace as of March 19, 2026. Analysts project 2026 cotton acreage at 9.229 million acres, slightly under 2025 levels, per a Reuters survey, reflecting cautious farmer sentiment amid volatile markets. The Cotlook A Index jumped 65 points to 78.85 cents/lb, while ICE certified stocks held steady at 114,665 bales, signaling tight supply dynamics despite weak export momentum. Crude oil’s $4.32 rally to $98.80 and a stronger dollar ($99.915) influenced cotton’s gains, though physical sales via The Seam averaged 64.16 cents/lb for 6,389 bales.
