Corn futures surged midday Wednesday, with contracts gaining 5 to 10 cents as the national cash price hit $4.60¾, up 10 cents. March 2025 contracts led at $4.95½, reflecting broad market optimism. Mexico’s president dismissed fears of U.S. tariffs set for February 1, easing trade tensions that had pressured corn markets. The statement boosted confidence in cross-border agricultural trade stability. Ethanol production fell sharply by 84,000 barrels per day to 1.015 million bpd, per EIA data, while stocks declined 152,000 barrels. Refiner demand rose slightly, signaling mixed demand signals for corn-based ethanol. Traders anticipate Thursday’s USDA Export Sales report to show 0.85–1.8 million metric tons of 2024/25 corn sold, a key indicator of global demand and potential price momentum. May and December 2025 contracts rose to $5.06 and $4.66½, respectively, with new-crop cash prices up 6 cents, suggesting sustained bullish sentiment across near- and long-term markets.
