Live cattle futures rose modestly on April 8, 2026, with August contracts gaining up to $1.30, while deferred contracts saw smaller increases. Cash trades remained stalled, following last week’s $245–$246 range. Feeder cattle futures surged $1.10–$1.90 in front-month contracts, contrasting with the CME Feeder Cattle Index’s slight dip to $364.59. Wholesale boxed beef prices fell, with Choice down $3.08 and Select dropping $4.06. USDA reported a 109,000-head cattle slaughter on Wednesday, bringing the weekly total to 320,000—4,000 fewer than the prior week and nearly 30,000 below 2025 levels. An online auction for 970 head received no bids, as sellers held firm at $250 live. The market showed resilience despite lower slaughter volumes and declining wholesale beef prices. April feeder cattle contracts closed at $370.675, up $1.775, while August live cattle inched up just $0.050, reflecting mixed near-term and long-term sentiment.
