California-based Prime Healthcare Foundation, a nonprofit charity, acquired Central Maine Healthcare in February 2026, marking its first expansion into Maine and growing its network to 21 hospitals across eight states. The foundation pledged $150 million over five years for facility upgrades and service expansions tailored to local community needs, while preserving existing charity care and outreach programs. The deal includes Central Maine Medical Center, three hospitals, a cancer center, and over 40 physician practices, all retaining their names, local leadership, and current employees under the new ownership. Prime Healthcare Foundation, affiliated with the fifth-largest for-profit U.S. health system, will honor existing contracts and operate as the sole parent organization of Central Maine Healthcare. The acquisition follows a year-long evaluation process, with Central Maine Healthcare’s board citing mission alignment and Prime’s track record in supporting vulnerable communities as key factors in the decision.
