About
Quintessent is a US photonic-integrated-circuit startup founded in 2019 in Santa Barbara, California by Optica Fellow John Bowers (UCSB) and Alan Liu. It develops heterogeneously integrated quantum-dot (QD) lasers and multiwavelength comb sources for high-bandwidth DWDM optical interconnects, AI-data-centre links, and photonic quantum systems. In September 2021, Quintessent and Tower Semiconductor demonstrated the first heterogeneous integration of GaAs quantum-dot lasers in a commercial foundry silicon-photonics process, the PH18DB platform. In March 2024, the company closed an $11.5M seed round. Quintessent is also a DARPA LUMOS programme participant alongside Harvard and Sandia.
