About
The Quantum Software Lab is a £20 million UKRI-funded research centre at the University of Edinburgh, established as part of the UK Government's £2B 'Quantum Leap' programme announced on March 17, 2026. The lab takes a full-stack quantum computing approach spanning hardware and software development, positioning the University of Edinburgh as the UK's national centre for quantum software research. It brings together researchers in quantum algorithms, quantum error correction, quantum programming languages, and quantum machine learning, working closely with the National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC) at Harwell and industry partners to translate quantum software research into practical applications. The lab contributes to building the quantum software ecosystem needed to exploit fault-tolerant quantum computers expected in the early 2030s. The lab was announced on March 17, 2026 as part of UKRI's £65M quantum investment package, alongside the NQCC expansion and additional funding for the National Quantum Technology Hubs. It is one of three major new UK quantum computing investments in the 'Quantum Leap' announcement, with funding available from April 2026. Update 2026-02-25: The Quantum Software Lab is hosting the NQCC Quantum Fringe 2026 Festival of Quantum. Source: https://quantumzeitgeist.com/quantum-software-lab-computing-fringe-event/
